Subject: IM possibilities
Here are some possibilities about IM/chat
First keep in mind that there are:
- the platform: one or more servers relying the messages and using a specific protocol
- the clients: executables or web pages that allow to interact with the platform. A single client can allow to interact with multiple accounts/platforms (e.g. I use
Pidgin that supports GoTalk, XMPP/Jabber, AIM, and others)
Simple IM is a one-2-one or group (mani-2-many) communication where you have to connect to a person to start texting to one or more other people
For 'chat room' I intend something similar but instead of connecting to a person I connect to a conveened name (the name of the chat room) and my mesages are relayed
to all the people connected to the room (and I receive the messages that all the other people send to the room)
To avoid intrusions rooms can be protected with a password or a manager can kick people out or mute them.
I think we need a 'chat room' so whoever starts the shift can connect to the room, get a biefing, be contacted from other people (without them needing to know how to
contact a specific person), ...
Some platforms that offer chat rooms:
- IRC
- plain Jabber (XMPP)
- gtalk (Jabber protocol)
- AIM
- skype
I think gTalk could be a good option:
- many people have a gmail/gtalk account
- uses a standard protocol (Jabber)
- variety of clients
- exist 2 chat extensions:
1. the google talk gadget (http://www.google.com/talk/) supports chat rooms but regular client or jabber clients would only be able to follow the conversation on the
web
2. partychat (http://techwalla.googlepages.com/): it has a IRC-like text interface to make/join chat rooms (old school text commands) and works with any gTalk or
Jabber client
AIM is also pretty easy to use with good clients for many OSs.
Pidgin is a very good client for linux and supports also chat rooms (that was difficult with the older Gaim)
Protocol is less standard but it is well supported and older than gTalk (more people may have already an account).
If many people have AIM accounts this could be another option.
If we want to manage our server we could use plain Jabber; alternatively google is providing the server registering google accounts.
IRC is another possibility (people should register in IRC and have a good client for it - I use Colloqui) but some sites (e.g. BNL) block it with the firewall.
Skype is not liked by CERN (if things didn't changed recently)
Another useful link independently from what we choose could be meboo: http://www.meebo.com/
an online (Web) client for many IM systems
Cheers,
Marco

Hi Xavier,
I went ahead and created a 'atlasshift' chat room with no password.
I'm there (for some more hours), please join.
Anyone can join it.
To join it:
0. If you have no google account go to http://www.google.com/talk/ download a client or open the web one and register
1. open your favourite google talk client
2. add partychat#@gmail.com (# is any digit 0-9) as your buddy: this is not a real person; it is a service gateway. Steps 2-3 are documented also at
http://techwalla.googlepages.com/ 3. open a message window to talk with partychat#@gmail.com (double click, IM, ...)
4. send the message '/join atlasshift' . If you are using Pidgin or another client that supports IRC like commands (you will see 'Unknow command error' instead of
your message) then type '/say /join atlasshift' (this protects your message for partychat)
Partychat will reply to you saying that you joined the chat room
5. '/list' to see whois there
6. type comething to talk with all the others
7. '/exit' to go out
I'm there, so if someone is joining you will see me.
If you need help joining the chat you can send me an email or contact me via IM:
marcomambelli@gmail.com
'atlasshift' is a temporary name. If you don't like it I can change it, as long as we agree on something.
Let's start trying google talk.
As I said before I'm fine with both gtalk and aim (I think both are a good options): if more people is familiar with AIM or someone wants to try we can open a room
there as well.
By next week we should converge (by vote or executive decision) on a single solution.
If you tell me where I should write this I can write it on the twiki (separate page or shift instructions?)
Thanks,
Marco
